The Benefits of Flossing Everyday

A Few More Reasons Why You Should Floss Everyday

Everybody already knows that brushing at least twice a day is important in maintaining your overall dental health and hygiene. But do you floss your teeth regularly? Here are three reasons why you shouldn’t write off this important step.

Prevent plaque buildup. Not reaching for the dental floss for even just a couple of days gives the bacteria in your mouth plenty of time to solidify and turn into plaque. Plaque can harden between your teeth within hours of your last meal. And once 48 hours have passed, it will be firmly stuck to your teeth and can only be removed by your dentist.

Minimize bleeding gums. Are you put off by flossing because it leaves the thread bloody? Although it seems odd, regular flossing will prevent gingivitis and stop your gums from bleeding. If you remove the bacteria from your teeth and gum line, your body will not send blood cells to your gums to fight the infection.

Prevent disease. Cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and even respiratory disease have all been linked to plaque buildup and gum disease. By flossing every day and maintaining good oral health, you can minimize your risk for these serious conditions or manage it better, if you’re already suffering from these conditions.

Have stronger teeth. What’s more unfortunate than getting a cavity? It’s getting a cavity in between two teeth. Instead of damaging just one tooth, this kind of cavity can cause damage to two teeth, meaning both would have to be drilled or pulled out. What’s even more depressing is that the pain and money spent on fixing this problem would’ve been avoided if you only flossed your teeth.
