What are dental bridges and crowns?
As the name suggests, a dental bridge acts as a bridge between tooth gaps normally caused by missing teeth. Depending on how many teeth are missing, a bridge is used to fill in spaces and replace one or several teeth.
The bridge will need the support of your existing teeth to stay in place. Dental crowns are also used to anchor the bridge and keep it secure.
In cases where a decaying tooth can still be saved, but a good portion of it needs to be taken out, a tooth crown or cap is used to cover the remaining structure and prevent further damage. The crown is permanently attached to your damaged tooth to improve its appearance, and is designed to match the color of your teeth.
Will my dental bridge or crown look natural?
In most cases, your dentist will recommend a certain type of material for the crown or artificial teeth for a more natural appearance. Usually, porcelain is used for the crown. Stronger material such as gold and other metal alloys can also be used, but because metal crowns stand out, they are preferred for out-of-sight molars.
For bridges, dentists usually recommend porcelain for a more natural look.
You might need to make two trips to the dentist to get a dental bridge or tooth crown. The first one will be to assess the damage and to get the size of your upper or lower teeth, depending on where the crown or bridge will be installed. A mold of your teeth will be made to serve as basis for measuring the crown or bridge.
The second visit will be for the preparation of support teeth, and the installation of dental bridges or dental crowns. The dentist will test your bite, and ask you how you feel with your new teeth installed, checking if adjustments need to be made.
Once your dental bridge or tooth crown has been installed, you’ll have the confidence to flash that beautiful smile once again!
