Root canals often get a bad reputation in the media, often synonymous with pain, however root canals are actually a treatment meant to relieve pain from an infected tooth. Root canals are designed to make your mouth feel more normal again and protect your smile.

Below, Audubon Dental Center goes over what a patient can expect during a root canal treatment — it’s never as bad as patients think!

Millions of teeth are treated and saved via the root canal procedure. A root canal can usually be done in one or two appointments, depending on the circumstances the patient is facing. The root canal procedure is actually virtually painless

When Do I Need a Root Canal?

Patients with a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, or issues that arise from a previous filling will need a root canal procedure. If your teeth are feeling sensitive to hot and cold foods and beverages, this is a good sign that you need this procedure. Pain during chewing or biting, swollen or tender gums, and darkening of the gums are also good signs you need a root canal.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

During a root canal procedure your nerve and pulp are removed and the inside of your tooth is cleaned with professional tools, then sealed to stop the infection in its tracks and protect the tooth from that moment forward. Some patients may require further restoration of the tooth. A crown and/or a post will be placed on the tooth to prevent it from breaking, restoring your mouth to full function again.

Root Canal Cost

At Audubon Dental Center we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Cost will vary from patient to patient depending on how complex the problem is. Many dental insurance policies provide some amount of coverage for this type of endodontic treatment. Often root canals end up being less expensive than tooth extractions.
