Risks of Not Brushing Your Teeth at Night

Some of us (well, come to think of it, many of us) live lives that are constantly on the go. With jam-packed schedules where it seems like we literally have to account for every single hour we have, it might seem okay to skip on brushing at night.

However, there are many risks that come along with skipping a night brushing and flossing session, which Audubon Dental Center discusses below.

You Risk Plaque Build-Up

Every time you fail to brush at night your teeth are being attacked, covered in a biofilm that accumulates within our mouths all day long. You might notice this biofilm whenever your teeth feel rough on any surface. Trapped inside this plaque that builds up in your mouth are tiny bacteria that eat away at your enamel, causing cavities and tooth decay that can eventually lead to gum disease.

Brushing and flossing twice a day and keeping your scheduled visits with your family dentist is the best way to help fight plaque buildup. Brushing at night is especially crucial, because our teeth and mouth need to be cleaned from exposure throughout the day.

When you fail to brush your teeth before falling asleep at night, you’re giving bacteria 7-9 hours to do some serious damage to your smile. When you brush, it’s important that you wait 20-40 minutes after eating or drinking a beverage — especially if whatever you’re having has any amount of sugars, acids, or carbohydrates. This allows your mouth to neutralize agents which could otherwise do damage to your enamel if you were to brush right away. Brush gently, in circular motions, and use a soft-bristle toothbrush. Make sure to always brush for multiple minutes each time you do.
