Stop gum disease from progressing
While gum disease might be common, it should never be taken lightly. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, can degrade your oral health to the extent that it can result in lost teeth, bone loss, and other serious oral health issues. For moderate to advanced gum disease, we generally recommend scaling and root planning, also known as a deep cleaning
At Audubon Dental Center of Clinton, we’re here to be your partners in long-term oral health. If we see signs of gum disease during your exam, we’ll lay out the status of your health and what your treatment options are. We’ll always explain our recommendations fully so that you can make the right choice for you and your family.
Scaling and root planning deep cleans your smile
When you experience gum disease, bacteria and plaque form on the teeth under the gum tissue. This can lead to lots of issues for your mouth, including bone and tooth loss. With a dental deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, we’ll remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and your gums. Additionally, we’ll clean the roots of your teeth, removing any bacteria.
Together, scaling and planning help restore your smile and ensure your gums and teeth are free from bacteria and on the right track toward optimal health.
Answers to your questions about deep cleanings
How is a deep cleaning different from a normal dental cleaning?
While everyone should get a dental cleaning once every 6 months, deep cleanings are recommended for patients experiencing moderate to advanced gum disease. For patients with gum disease, we might recommend frequent dental cleanings — up to 4 a year for some patients.
How many appointments do root planning and scaling require?
Deep cleanings will be performed over 2 separate appointments. When performing the cleaning, we’ll numb the side of the mouth we’ll work on and ensure you’re comfortable the entire time.
Does insurance cover dental deep cleaning treatment?
While every dental insurance plan is different, many plans will cover around 50% of deep cleaning treatments. For more information about your individual plan coverage, contact our office!
